Powering Efficiency: Hydrogenera’s Energy Innovation at Volkswagen Poznań

At Hydrogenera, the future of industrial energy lies in the seamless integration of hydrogen technologies into existing infrastructures.
Today, we are proud to announce a significant milestone in this journey: a collaboration with Volkswagen Poznań to implement a cutting-edge hydrogen-oxygen system at their Wrzesnia Plant.
Volkswagen Poznań is a cornerstone of European automotive manufacturing. Operating since 1993, it is a modern facility responsible for producing the VW Caddy, VW Transporter, and the latest-generation VW Crafter. As the largest private employer in the Wielkopolska region, with a staff of 10,000, it sets a high standard for the industry.

The Challenge: Enhancing Combustion Efficiency

The primary objective of this project is to enhance the combustion process of natural gas for a gas burner with a nominal power of 1.5 MW. Industrial heating and combustion processes are traditionally energy-intensive, making them prime candidates for hydrogen-based optimisation.

The Solution: A High-Tech "Add-On"

Our solution involves a specialised hydrogen-oxygen system designed to operate as a non-intrusive "add-on" to the facility's existing equipment. This ensures that the upgrade does not interfere with currently operating installations, automation, or safety systems.
Technical Specifications:
  • Core Unit: The system features an electrolyser with a power capacity of up to 90 kW, installed within a dedicated container alongside auxiliary systems.
  • The Process: Hydrogen and oxygen are supplied separately to optimise the flame. Hydrogen is mixed with natural gas directly before the burner, while oxygen is introduced into the air stream directed to the combustion chamber.

Measurable Ecological and Economic Benefits

By enriching the fuel mixture, the system ensures complete fuel combustion and minimises energy losses. The projected impact on the plant’s operations is substantial:
  • Fuel Efficiency: The improvements can lead to up to a 30% reduction in conventional fuel consumption.
  • Emissions Reduction: A corresponding reduction in gas emissions is expected, contributing to a cleaner manufacturing footprint.

Meeting Global Standards: The Volkswagen S-Rating

Executing a project of this magnitude requires meeting the rigorous standards of the Volkswagen Group. In July, our parent company, Green Innovation, became an authorised VW supplier with direct access to the ONE.Konzern Business site.
Crucially, Green Innovation successfully navigated the Sustainability Rating (S-Rating) process. This mandatory assessment evaluates suppliers before they can enter into a business relationship with Volkswagen AG.
"Green Innovation was awarded a green circle, a positive S-Rating."
This positive rating is a prerequisite for doing business with Volkswagen Group brands. It validates that our operations, including our Code of Conduct and environmental management policies, align with the highest global standards.

Looking Ahead

With the financial offer officially submitted in September and technical details finalised during site visits to the Wrzesnia plant, the project is moving swiftly toward implementation. The 2025 timeline includes final revisions and strictly agreed-upon delivery deadlines.
This collaboration demonstrates that hydrogen is not just a fuel of the future. It is a technology for now, capable of delivering immediate efficiency gains to the leaders of European industry.
