Hydrogenera wins Horizon Europe funding for HYPPOS

Hydrogenera is part of the successful consortium behind HYPPOS, a research and innovation project selected for funding under Horizon Europe.
Securing Horizon Europe funding requires proposals to demonstrate scientific excellence, meaningful impact and a credible implementation plan. HYPPOS successfully passed this highly competitive evaluation, recognising the expertise that Hydrogenera and its project partners bring to the future of hydrogen storage.
For Hydrogenera, the project represents an opportunity to apply its engineering and system integration expertise to one of the hydrogen economy’s most important challenges.

Producing hydrogen is only part of the equation

Hydrogen can store renewable energy, support the decarbonisation of industrial processes and contribute to cleaner mobility. To fulfil this potential, it must also be stored safely, efficiently and reliably.
Storage technologies must perform under real operating conditions. They need to respond quickly, retain their performance over repeated cycles and integrate with energy networks, mobility systems and industrial infrastructure.
HYPPOS will address this challenge by developing safe, circular and scalable solid-state hydrogen storage solutions.

Two approaches to advanced hydrogen storage

HYPPOS will combine two complementary storage technologies.
The first uses hybrid silica-carbon nanostructures designed to store hydrogen efficiently and support rapid absorption and desorption.
The second uses metal hydrides produced from recycled Hydralloy C5-type alloys. These materials are being developed to provide reliable hydrogen storage over hundreds of operating cycles while supporting greater material circularity.
The project will use scalable production methods and rigorous testing to evaluate hydrogen capacity, absorption and desorption speed, operating pressure and long-term durability.
This will allow the project partners to compare performance consistently and understand how the materials behave as they progress from laboratory research towards kilogram-scale validation.
HYPPOS is targeting a 30% reduction in cost, a 30% to 50% reduction in energy consumption, up to 50% lower CO₂ emissions compared with current commercial methods, and material circularity above 80%.

Connecting research with real energy systems

Developing promising materials in a laboratory is only the beginning. They must also meet the requirements of the systems in which they will operate.
This is where Hydrogenera will contribute its expertise.
The company will help define the operational requirements for using the new hydrogen storage technologies in grid-connected and off-grid energy systems.
Hydrogenera will assess factors including:
  • Hydrogen storage capacity
  • Operating pressure
  • Absorption and desorption speed
  • Performance over repeated cycles
  • Energy delivery stability
  • System response times
  • Peak-load management
The company will also examine how hydrogen storage can support vehicle-to-grid and fuel cell electric vehicle-to-grid applications. These systems could allow mobile and stationary hydrogen storage units to contribute energy when electricity networks require additional flexibility.
By connecting material performance data with system-level requirements, Hydrogenera will help ensure that the technologies developed through HYPPOS remain relevant to grid operators, manufacturers and future industrial users.

Establishing common performance standards

Hydrogenera will work with project partners including HEREON, SINTEF and OPEL to develop protocols for assessing hydrogen storage performance.
Common protocols are essential because different storage technologies must be evaluated using consistent and reproducible methods. This makes it possible to compare results, identify degradation and understand whether a material can maintain its performance outside controlled laboratory conditions.
Hydrogenera will contribute its operational perspective to this process, helping align scientific testing with practical energy, mobility and infrastructure requirements.

From research to industrial deployment

During the later stages of HYPPOS, Hydrogenera will also contribute to a blueprint for industrial deployment.
The blueprint will bring together the project’s findings and define how the storage technologies could progress towards commercial energy and mobility applications.
Through HYPPOS, Hydrogenera will help bridge the gap between advanced materials research and operational energy infrastructure.
Being part of the successful Horizon Europe proposal is an important recognition of Hydrogenera’s technical expertise. It also expands the company’s contribution to the hydrogen value chain, from producing hydrogen to helping develop the systems required to store, manage and use it effectively.
